Here is the process to restore the expansion joint with wood insertions:
1. You must remove all the wood using a chisel or cutting it out with a skill saw. Or,
2. Clean the joint to a depth of 2-3/4 inches deep so you can fit the backer rod and the self-leveling caulk.
3. Once the joint is clean insert the 1-1/4-inch backer rod to fit tightly to the sides. The loose backer rod will float to the top over the self-leveling caulk making a mess.
4. Please watch the video and follow the same process to seal the joint. https://youtu.be/NPPLpkhwdFQ
5. For joints 1-1/4 inch wide you will need more caulk than standard ½ inch wide joints.
6. Please email me the length of the joints and the with so we can respond with the appropriate product quote to complete your project.
7. This solution will allow for the hot and wintry weather movement and expansion of the concrete.
8. You may also consider sealing the aggregate slabs to reduce concrete stress and freeze/thaw effects.
